|April 14, 2009 - John Cirilli, AIA, LEED, a Partner at Rockland-county based Michael Shilale Architects, isn’t wasting any time putting his LEED accreditation to use. Since acquiring his new credential, Cirilli has begun to develop “greening” plans for his firm’s corporate headquarters in downtown New City and is working on several Energy Saving Performance Contracts for their school district clients. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), is an internationally recognized standard which accredits experts in the field and certifies buildings that meet sustainable green building and development practices)
“We should see electrical, heating and cooling savings, and possibly water reduction usage too, so what better way to practice what we preach than to start at home?” says Cirilli, whose firm has designed diverse commercial, corporate and residential projects for 18 years.
“We are now more strongly positioned to provide the proper guidance and advice on any project where the owner requires the end product to have a LEED certified design, whether they are seeking Silver, Gold, Platinum or regular certification, “ said Cirilii. He also notes that while sustainable projects usually incur additional design and construction costs, many projects qualify for multiple tax incentives, credits, equipment purchase incentives, etc. that may offset the increased initial investment – an attractive incentive for those seeking to adopt green-approved practices.
Michael Shilale Architects has had a vested interest in designing smart and ecologically-friendly facilities with a greener footprint for some time now (Michael Shilale, principal of the firm became a LEED accredited designer in 2003). Their sensitivity and expertise have already been noted, with the firm winning several important green projects, including United Water’s Haverstraw Water Supply Project and a 60 unit active adult community in Rockland County.
