“How the World Really Works” by Dr. Vaclav Smil, is a powerful analysis of the real choices involving our climate and environment and their relationship to fossil fuels.

As an architect for almost 40 years, I have seen firsthand the transformation of our building industry. From our fabricated ‘oil shortage’ in the 70’s to the powerful impact the environmental movement has had on our world. We unquestionably have a cleaner and healthier environment due to the efforts of a wide range of stakeholders. The challenge now is how to manage the hyperbole and the claims of existential threats that cloud and confuse our real circumstances.

The truth is, without fossil fuels, now and in the foreseeable future, most of the world would be poorer, unhealthier, and literally without food.

Dr. Smil claims ammonia cannot be produced in enough quantity without fossil fuels. Further, he states, half the world would starve without the critical nitrogen fertilizer contained in ammonia.   His book goes into substantial detail of not only ammonia as the only practical fertilizer; he goes on to reveal the other three pillars of society that are dependent on fossil fuels and will be for a long time to come:  concrete, steel and plastics.

Dr. Smil provides a sober assessment of our options in light of this information. He hopes we see and understand the significant possibilities for improvement in our environment and our world and make the right choices moving forward.
